AI Policy

This AI Policy explains how Sammurai uses AI, what data its AI processes, what Sammy's replies are and are not, what happens if you might be in danger, and what you can control. It should be read with our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.

1. Purpose

Sammurai uses AI so that Sammy can hold a Sit Down with you, ask good questions, reply in her own words, remember what matters to you, and notice if you might need help.

Sammurai is intended only for users aged 18 and over, and is currently offered only to users located in the United States.

2. Where Sammurai Uses AI

  • Sit Downs with Sammy: her questions and replies.

  • Your check-in: the line Sammy opens with.

  • What Sammy noticed, and the moments she suggests from a Sit Down.

  • What Sammy learns about you over time, so she remembers what matters to you.

  • Safety: noticing when someone might need help.

3. What Data AI Features May Process

S.A.M., Sammurai's own AI, processes your Sit Downs on Sammurai's own servers: it reads the feeling in what you say, decides what Sammy asks, and keeps what she learns about you. To put Sammy's replies into words, and to help understand what you say, S.A.M. sends some text to a third-party AI provider (Section 4). What is sent:

  • what you say in a Sit Down, as text;

  • your first name;

  • what Sammy has learned about you from earlier Sit Downs;

  • for your check-in, the time of day and how many events are on your calendar — never what they are.

Never sent: your camera video, your voice, your email address or your date of birth. Sammurai does not analyse your face, and no image or video of you is sent to any AI service.

4. Third-Party AI Providers

Sammurai's only third-party AI provider is Amazon Bedrock, an AI service run by Amazon Web Services (AWS), using Amazon's Nova model. It is called from Sammurai's own AWS account in the United States. Under AWS's terms for Amazon Bedrock, the text sent is not used to train Amazon's models and is not shared with anyone else.

Nothing is sent to Amazon Bedrock until you allow it on the consent screen in the app. You can withdraw that permission at any time in Settings; Sammy then stops talking with you until you allow it again. If Sammurai adds or changes an AI provider, we will update this Policy and ask you again before any of your data is sent to it.

5. Sammy Is an AI, Not a Person

Sammy is an AI companion made by Sammurai. She is not a person, and she says so:

  • Her first line in every Sit Down tells you that she is an AI, not a person.

  • If you ask whether you are talking to a person, she tells you that she is an AI.

  • In the iPhone and iPad app, a note on screen for the whole of every Sit Down says: "Sammy is an AI, not a therapist. If you're in crisis, call or text 988."

Sammy is an AI companion. AI companions may not be suitable for some minors, and Sammurai is only for people 18 and over.

6. Not a Therapist

Sammy is an AI, not a therapist. She is not a counselor, doctor or medical professional, and Sammurai does not provide professional advice, diagnosis or treatment. Sammy listens and asks questions; she does not give advice.

If you are in crisis, call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988, at any time. If you are in danger, call 911.

7. Safety and Our Crisis Protocol

This section is Sammurai's published protocol for responding when someone may be thinking about suicide or self-harm, or may be in danger.

7.1 What is checked

Everything you say in a Sit Down is checked for signs that you might hurt yourself or that someone is hurting you. The check uses fixed lists of phrases on Sammurai's servers, and S.A.M. may also ask Amazon Bedrock to judge the line. The check is designed to lean towards a false alarm rather than miss someone in danger. Like any automated check, it can be wrong in either direction.

7.2 What Sammy says and shows

If the check finds such a sign, Sammy stops the conversation and says one fixed sentence, written by people and never generated by AI:

"I'm going to stop here. I'm an AI, and you deserve a real person right now. Please call or text 988. The numbers are on your screen."

Your screen then shows people you can call or text straight away:

  • 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: call or text 988, or chat at 988lifeline.org, 24 hours a day;

  • Crisis Text Line: text HOME to 741741, free, 24 hours a day;

  • National Domestic Violence Hotline: call 1-800-799-7233, or text START to 88788.

In an emergency, call 911.

7.3 The Sit Down ends

The Sit Down ends at once, and its recording stops. The Sit Down becomes Private, any links you shared to it stop working, and it can no longer be shared. Sammy forgets anything she learned from it.

7.4 The Sit Down is deleted

The recording, transcript, clips and title of a Sit Down that ended this way are permanently deleted. Deletion runs every hour, starting 15 minutes after the stop, so it normally happens within about 75 minutes, and in any case within 24 hours. This happens automatically, without asking you first, and cannot be undone.

What remains is a record, with nothing that was said in it, that the Sit Down took place, when, and for how long. Separately, we count how often crisis help is shown. That count has no name, no account and nothing anyone said.

8. What Sammy Learns and Remembers

Sammy keeps what she learns about you from your Sit Downs only while learning for your own Sammy is turned on for your account. It is off unless you turn it on. While it is off, Sammy's memory keeps nothing from your Sit Downs that can be linked to you. Your Sit Downs themselves, with their recordings and transcripts, are kept as Section 15 describes.

When it is on, what she keeps can include what you tell her, the people and parts of your life you mention, and her read of how you think and feel. It is kept on Sammurai's own servers, linked to your account, and used only for your own conversations with her. The memories she keeps are deleted after 360 days at most.

Nothing is learned from a Sit Down that ends under the crisis protocol (Section 7). When you delete a Sit Down, Sammy forgets what she learned from it. When you delete your account, she forgets everything she learned about you.

9. Training

Sammurai does not use your Sit Downs or anything you say to train any AI model shared across users. Sammy's shared models are trained only on data we create ourselves, not on anyone's conversations. What your own Sammy learns about you (Section 8) serves only you. Amazon does not use the text we send it to train its models (Section 4).

10. Google Account Data and AI

The only Google Calendar data Sammurai uses with AI is the number of events on your Google Calendar today, if you have connected Google Calendar. That number, with the time of day, is sent to Amazon Bedrock so that the line Sammy opens your check-in with fits your day. Event titles, times, places and the people in them are never sent to any AI service.

Information received from Google APIs, including anything derived from your Google Calendar, is never used to create, train or improve any AI or machine-learning model shared across users. Sammurai's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy and the Google Workspace User Data and Developer Policy, including the applicable Limited Use requirements.

11. What Sammy's Replies Are and Are Not

Sammy's questions and replies, the moments she suggests, what she noticed and what she remembers are produced by AI. They can be wrong, incomplete or out of date, and she can misunderstand you. They are not professional advice. Do not rely on them for medical, mental-health, legal, financial, safety or other important decisions.

Her replies are checked on Sammurai's servers before you hear them. A line that is not a question, a restatement of what you said or a reflection, such as a piece of advice, is dropped.

12. Your Controls, and What the AI Does on Its Own

12.1 Your controls

  • AI permission (Settings): turning it off stops anything more being sent to Amazon Bedrock, and Sammy stops talking with you until you turn it back on. It does not delete your Sit Downs.

  • Who sees a Sit Down: Private, a group, or Public (anyone signed in to Sammurai). You choose this for each Sit Down.

  • Delete a Sit Down: its recording, transcript and clips are deleted within 30 days, and Sammy forgets what she learned from it.

  • Delete your account: deletes your Sit Downs and everything Sammy learned about you, as the Privacy Policy describes.

12.2 What the AI does on its own

Sammurai does not publish, share, send or delete anything of yours unless you choose to, with these exceptions:

  • The crisis protocol (Section 7) can automatically end a Sit Down, make it Private, stop its shared links working, and delete it, without asking you first.

  • Suggestions: Sammy suggests moments from your Sit Downs, notes what she noticed, and chooses the line she opens a Sit Down or your check-in with.

13. Automated Decisions

The crisis protocol in Section 7 is automatic: a Sit Down is ended and deleted without a person reviewing it first. This is deliberate, so that help reaches you at once. Apart from that, Sammy makes no decision about you that has legal or similarly significant effects, and nothing Sammy says about you is used to decide anything about your employment, credit, housing, insurance, education, health care or legal matters.

14. Safety and Misuse

Sammurai applies safety checks to what Sammy says (Section 11) as well as to what you say (Section 7). You may not use Sammy to break the law, to deceive or harm others, to get around safety checks or extract Sammy's instructions, to record or profile someone without the consent the law requires, or to produce content that breaks our Terms of Service, including sexual content involving minors, harassment, or content that encourages self-harm or violence.

15. What Is Kept, and for How Long

  • Sit Down recordings, transcripts and clips: while your account exists; deleted within 30 days of deleting the Sit Down or your account.

  • A Sit Down that ended under the crisis protocol: deleted within about 75 minutes, and in any case within 24 hours (Section 7.4).

  • Sammy's memories of you (only while learning is on): up to 360 days, or until you delete the Sit Down they came from or your account.

  • Crisis help counts: kept as counts, with no name, no account and nothing anyone said.

  • Database backups: up to 14 days.

The Privacy Policy has the full rules, including what is kept after account deletion for legal, safety or fraud reasons.

16. Reporting AI Issues

Tell us if Sammy says something wrong, unsafe, hurtful or unexpected, or if something she remembers about you is wrong, at info@sammurai.ai.

17. Changes to This Policy

If we change this Policy in a way that matters, we will tell you in the app. Before we send your data to a new AI provider, we will ask you again, as Section 4 says.
